KELLY CRACKING DOWN
The discipline and supervision of the 700 students at Kelly Middle School has been a challenge for Norwich school officials. “The Day” is reporting several changes will be implemented this year in the hopes of reversing the trend and improving the school’s reputation. School officials say many student confrontations have been escalations of disputes started on social media either at school or in neighborhoods.
Angelo Callis, Norwich Youth and Family Services coordinator, said the high number of students referred to his agency is a sign that Norwich school officials are being proactive in addressing student behavior before they end up in juvenile court. Callis said his agency is being called to Kelly more frequently to assist with student behavioral problems.
BROWN RE-ELECTED, TWO DOGS OUT
Kevin Brown, the retired Army colonel elected chairman of the Mohegan Tribal Council in 2013, won re-election to a second four-year council term Sunday. Brown and three other incumbents were elected along with a newcomer, Sarah Harris, the daughter of Roland Harris, a former council chairman and first selectman of Griswold. Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum, another former council chairman, failed to win re-election. A total of ten candidates vied for the five council seats up for election. The council will elect officers when the newly elected councilors’ terms commence in October.
BLUMENTHAL DEMANDS AID
(Bridgeport, CT) — Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal is demanding that federal aid begin flowing to Texas immediately. Blumenthal says the Gulf Coast needs immediate assistance from the devastation brought by Hurricane Harvey. Blumenthal says Congress needs to come together and put aside divisiveness in order to help the Gulf Coast. He says those issues caused delays in releasing federal aid to Connecticut communities impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Blumenthal is making several stops in Connecticut today, including New London this afternoon, to express his demands.
MAN JUMPS FROM OVERPASS
(East Hartford, CT) — A Plainfield man is seriously injured after jumping from an overpass along Route Two in East Hartford. Police say Everol Masters had brutally beaten his wife in an East Hartford motel just before a crash early yesterday. He reportedly told police he killed his wife at the motel, where she was found seriously injured but alive. Masters is charged with traffic offenses for the crash on Route Two, with police continuing to investigate the assault on his wife.
TEEN RUN OVER
(Lisbon, CT) — A Lisbon teenager is critically injured after falling from the back of a pickup truck and being backed over. The unidentified 15-year-old boy was in the back of a Ford Ranger as it backed into a Phillips Road driveway in Lisbon on Saturday. The boy fell, then was backed over by the same vehicle. The boy was initially taken to Backus Hospital in Norwich, but was later flown to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford.
CLOSE HONORED IN OLD SAYBROOK
Actress Glenn Close was in Old Saybrook on Saturday to except the Spirit of Katherine Hepburn Award. Close spoke about Hepburn’s influence on her and about meeting the legend. The award is given by the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center to someone who embodies Hepburn’s “spirit, independence and character.” During the day Saturday, Close got a tour of the former Hepburn estate in the Fenwick section of Old Saybrook. She said she “grew up in the fields and woods of Connecticut”, in Greenwich, but had never been to Old Saybrook or to Fenwick.
