ID IN LEDYARD SHOOTING
The man injured in a Tuesday night shooting incident in Ledyard has previously served time in prison. Police say 29-year old Jerrod Steele was driving a car with two cousins on Shewville Road around 10 PM when gunshots were fired at it from another vehicle. Steele was able to drive to the Citgo gas station on Route 2 in Preston while one of his passengers called 911. Steele was taken to the hospital where police say he is in stable condition after being shot in the abdomen. Steele has been in prison on various assault and robbery charges. Police continue to investigate the Tuesday shooting.
FLAGS LOWERED FOR DEAD SAILOR
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has ordered flags be lowered to half-staff to honor a Connecticut sailor who was killed when the USS John McCain collided with an oil tanker near Singapore.
Twenty-six-year-old Electronics Technician 3rd Class Dustin Louis Doyon was from Suffield. Malloy says U.S. and state flags will be lowered immediately and remain at half-staff until burial or memorial services are held. Details on such services have not yet been announced. Malloy calls Doyon an American hero who represented the best of Connecticut and the United States. Doyon was initially among 10 sailors missing after Monday’s collision. The U.S. Navy has found his remains and the remains of one of the other sailors, while the others remain missing.
LOCAL CONSTRUCTION WORKER KILLED
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – Police say a construction worker from Moosup has died after being hit by a car as she tried to slow traffic while a co-worker attempted to maneuver their disabled vehicle. West Haven police said Thursday that 24-year-old Jordan Garrett died of injuries suffered in the Wednesday night crash. Police say she was hit by an oncoming car while trying to get vehicles to slow or stop.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
BLUMENTHAL URGES TOUGHER REGULATIONS ON SMALL AIRCRAFT
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal is calling for stronger safety measures following a spate of deadly small aircraft crashes. The Connecticut Democrat sent a letter Friday to Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta outlining his concerns. Blumenthal said Connecticut has seen a string of eight small aircraft crashes and six fatalities so far this year. He said that’s on track to be the deadliest year for plane accidents in over a decade. In the letter, Blumenthal urges the FAA to investigate training, medical vetting, maintenance, safety regulations and resources to look for ways to prevent future tragedies. He said that while there hasn’t been a fatal crash involving a commercial airline in eight years, general aviation presents what he called “a troubling tale that consists of hundreds of deadly crashes each year.”

OCEAN AVENUE CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN
A major reconstruction project on Ocean Avenue in New London is scheduled to begin Monday. Mayor Mike Passero says the highway will be re-paved between Niles Hill Road and Neptune Avenue, with new granite curbing, sidewalks, and upgraded storm drainage systems to be installed. Traffic signals at the Glenwood Avenue and Neptune Avenue intersections will be removed, new handicapped accessible ramps will be placed at all intersections, and two five-foot wide bicycle lanes will be established. The work is expected to be completed within 150 days. The 2-point-1 million dollar cost is being covered by the state.
