FERRY SHOOTING
NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) – Two men have been arrested in New London after one of them is accused of firing a gun off a ferry coming from Block Island. The two men were arrested by police after they arrived on the ferry Wednesday. Police said the crew reported at 9:14 p.m. that the men were involved in a shooting off the ship’s stern. No one was hurt. Police say they seized a Glock 43 9mm handgun. Fifty-three-year-old Michael Richard, of Blythewood, South Carolina, and 55-year-old Michael McMahon, of Hamden, were charged with weapons and other charges. Both were released on $10,000 bond, and were due in New London Superior Court Sept. 6.
CT MAN AMONG MISSING SAILORS
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – A Connecticut man is among the sailors identified by the U.S. Navy as still missing after the USS John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker Monday near Singapore. Electronics Technician 3rd Class Dustin Louis Doyon, 26, of Suffield, and nine other sailors went missing after the accident. The search was called off Thursday. Doyon’s family says it’s a difficult time and they’re still hopeful he’ll be found and come home. Doyon enlisted in 2015. After training, he reported to his first ship, the McCain, in June 2016.
BEACH CLOSURES
State environmental officials say East Beach at Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic, as well as Hammonasset State Park in Madison are off-limits to swimming due to high bacteria counts. Officials say the water will be re-tested in both locations Friday, with the results due Saturday morning. Silver Sands State Park in Milford is also closed to swimming.
GROTON DRUG ARREST
A Groton man faces charges of heroin and cocaine possession with intent to sell. Town police arrest 31-year old Gianni Centeno after witnessing what they describe as ‘suspicious activity’ in the parking lot of a hotel. Police say the arrest was made in cooperation with the Regional Community Enhancement Task Force. Police seized the drugs plus drug paraphernalia and cash.
