PRESTON BUDGETS APPROVED
Yesterday, voters in Preston approved the school and town government budgets, completing the budget process for 2017-2018. The total combined budgets for the town comes to $16 million. The Board of Finance meets at 7 this evening to set the final Preston tax rate.
RULEY PARK GETS FUNDING
The Norwich City Council unanimously approved the use of a Sachem Fund grant to help develop a park at the former homestead of African American folk artist Ellis Walter Ruley. In addition to the $55,000 arts and cultural grant, a project committee has raised approximately $19,000 for the planned park, a fountain and informative signage on the Hammond Avenue property.
ORAL PRESENTATIONS
Groton Town planners have had about 20 showings, since last fall, of the Mystic Education Center to prospective developers. The 77 acre former Mystic Oral School has been vacant since 2011. The Office of Planning and Development Services will hold an informational session at the Groton Town Hall Annex tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. for members of the public who are interested in purchasing the property for redevelopment.
SPEED BOWL SEASON STARTS SATURDAY
The New London-Waterford Speedbowl will open for the season on Saturday. According to the track’s official website, pit gates open at 8:30 a.m. and grandstands at 10 a.m. Heat racing starts at approximately 2 p.m. with the opening ceremony and feature racing, including the Valenti Modified Racing Series, to follow. George Whitney of Whitney Farm Racing is leasing the track for the 2017 season after the arrest of track owner Bruce Bemer.
Scooter Rider Hospitalized
A woman on a scooter and a car collided yesterday afternoon at an intersection in Plainfield. The woman sustained head trauma after being thrown and was taken by ambulance to Plainfield Backus Emergency Care and was later transported by Lifestar to Hartford Hospital. The crash is currently under investigation.
