Courtesy of Acoustic-4-a-CureSammy Hagar will once again serve as co-host of the annual Acoustic-4-a-Cure benefit concert, which he co-founded with Metallica‘s James Hetfield in 2014.
Joining the Red Rocker to emcee this year’s event will be another Bay Area music legend, The Grateful Dead‘s Bob Weir. The fifth annual Acoustic-4-a-Cure show is scheduled for May 15 at The Fillmore in San Francisco.
Other artists on the bill include Eddie Money, REO Speedwagon‘s Kevin Cronin, folk-blues veteran Taj Mahal, and Hagar’s three Chickenfoot band mates: ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani.
In addition to its stated purpose of raising money for the Pediatric Cancer Program at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, this year’s Acoustic-4-a-Cure concert will serve as a 75th birthday celebration for Mahal.
“I was a fan of Taj Mahal long before I had my first record deal with Montrose in 1973,” says Hagar. “He’s become a dear friend over the years and without a doubt, is one of the most important blues legends we still have left on this planet!”
Sammy adds, “I’m thrilled this year to have Bob Weir back on board and presenting it with me, alongside all of the great artists on our line-up.”
Hagar co-hosted the Acoustic-4-a-Cure concert with Hetfield for its first three years. Hetfield missed last year’s show because of Metallica’s tour commitments, so Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl filled in. Metallica will be touring Europe in May of this year, which is presumably why Hetfield won’t be involved this year, either.
Tickets to the 2018 Acoustic-4-a-Cure concert go on sale this Friday, March 30, at 10 a.m. PT via LiveNation.com.
