Brad Barket/Getty ImagesAzealia Banks is no longer hiding “behind tired eyes.” Tuesday, the rapper dropped the music video for her track, “Soda,” which comes from her 2014 debut album, Broke with Expensive Taste.
She also explains the message behind the track, which is really about a dark period of her life during 2012.
Wednesday, Azealia wrote on Instagram, “Everything in the world was going well for me but I was just so sad. Earlier in the year I broke up with someone I thought I’d be with forever and was finding it hard to cope with the loneliness.”
“The guy served many roles in my life including being the very first father figure I’d ever had. When we broke up many pieces of what I considered to be my life and family fell apart.”
Azealia goes on to say she was also dealing with men in hip-hop who were “constantly disrespecting me and my craft” and that the “physical effects of anxiety and depression” were just too much to handle at the time.
“I started experimenting with self-medication…you name it…i tried it…after building a tolerance to everything, I decided to go to a psychiatrist and get a prescription for anti-depressants,” she adds.
After trying several types of anti-depressant drugs, the recording artist says there “was still this aching loneliness and impending sense of doom.”
She continues, “There was a time when my dresser counter was cluttered with empty prescription bottles, half smoked joints, empty wine bottles and take-out receipts…when is when I wrote the first words to this song…”
The video for “Soda” is online now.
