David Becker/Getty Images via ABCSean “Diddy” Combs, now simply known as Love, tells GQ that he and JAY-Z have been talking about collaborating — not on music, but on an app that he says will “change the narrative of the black race.”
As the mogul explains, “This is not about taking away from any other community. We’ll still go to Chinatown. We’ll still buy Gucci!”
“But the application will make it possible for us to have an economic community. It’s about blacks gaining economic power.”
GQ says that Combs and Jay’s currently unfinished and unnamed app will allow users to identify “black-owned and black-friendly businesses” in a given city, in order to patronize those businesses.
“I don’t believe in passiveness. At some point there has to be some kind of fight. I feel like we’ve done a lot of marching. It’s time to start charging,” Combs continues.
Meanwhile, the Bad Boy Records founder tells GQ that he’s “developed a mentorship relationship with the world. “God sent me here to inspire,” he adds.
He also name checks a handful of current stars who he says are on the same level, talent-wise, as his Bad Boy star, The Notorious B.I.G. Combs’ list includes Drake, SZA, Jay-Z, Nas, Migos and Future.
As for the one artist that gives him the same feeling of excitement he had when he discovered Biggie, Combs says, “Kendrick Lamar. But Kendrick’s already made.”
