ABC/Randy HolmesA Tribe Called Quest frontman Q-Tip and pop superstar Demi Lovato have teamed up to sing a reinterpretation of legendary rocker Elton John‘s song, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”
Their remake of the 1976 #1 pop track gives fans a more soulful, reggae groove and is featured on a new album called Revamp, which includes other stars’ spins on a variety of Elton’s classic hits.
In an interview video, Q-Tip explains that he got involved in the project because Elton played on Tribe’s final album, We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service.
He says, “Elton was gracious enough to be a part of this last Tribe album that we did. When it came around to this, it was just serendipitous and logical to return the favor.”
The music video for the song is also available to view on YouTube now. Neither Q-Tip or Demi appear in the visual, which was inspired by the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning.
That film documents the underground LGBTQ “ball culture,” where elaborately dressed participants — many in drag — compete at events called “balls,” which they “walk,” as though on a runway, and are judged by their clothing and dancing or “voguing” ability.
Revamp, which also features Mary J. Blige, “Scars to Your Beautiful” singer Alessia Cara, Lady Gaga and other stars reworking Elton’s hits, is out April 6.
