ABC RadioChuck D, leader of iconic rap group Public Enemy and member of rap rock supergroup Prophets of Rage, is also an outspoken activist.
In regards to Meek Mill, who’s currently serving two to four years in prison for violating probation, Chuck explains to ABC Radio why his public support for the imprisoned rapper was a no-brainer.
“When Meek Mill reached out to me, it was like, ‘Yeah!’ ’cause I’ve always spoken against, of course, the police brutality, or I should say one-sided government, but in Philly especially.”
He continues, “Just study the history of the corruption in the Philadelphia Police Department throughout the years. Take the 75 years, or last 100 years.”
“It’s damn near depicted in [HBO’s] Boardwalk Empire, movies, on the corruption of Philadelphia, Lower New Jersey, Atlantic City, all that pipeline had been corrupted for a long time, or one-sided.”
“When it came down to the policing, the overseer-ing of the black community, it never got better. Never got better. And corruption breeds corruption.”
“And when it came down to the treatment of the black community in Philadelphia, unfortunately it still boils down to ‘them people.'”
Chuck adds, “That area of Pennsylvania has always been in a sort of a neglect.”
