20KA special criminal justice reform panel focused on Meek Mill‘s current imprisonment took place in the rapper’s hometown of Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Philly.com reports that during the event Meek’s mother, Kathy Williams, pleaded to District Attorney Larry Krasner to help her son find victory in his legal case.
“I’m begging the D.A. Krasner. Can you please help me out?” she said.
Williams also criticized Common Pleas Court Judge Genece E. Brinkley, who sentenced Meek in November to two to four years for probation violations, and denied his request for bail in December.
“I don’t even understand how he’s been on probation for that many years,” she said.
“It’s like he murdered somebody. [Meek] has to beg to see his son. What kind of woman does that? Is she a mother? Do [sic] she have a mother?”
As previously noted, Meek’s lawyers started a legal campaign in November to have Judge Brinkley removed from the recording artist’s case.
They claim she imposed a harsher-than-usual sentence on the rapper, even though the prosecutor hadn’t requested jail time, and that she “repeatedly offered inappropriate personal and professional advice” to Meek, “both on and off the record.”
At the event, Meek himself telephoned from prison, and said, “I want to be a light for Philadelphia.”
The event, titled “REFORM: Bringing Injustice to Light,” took place at the University of Pennsylvania’s Irving Auditorium.
Reverend Al Sharpton, Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and Meek’s attorney Joe Tacopina were also among those in attendance.
Meek Mill is currently incarcerated at the Chester State Correctional Institution outside the city.
