He tells Music Choice in a new video interview that he came to the decision because of an eye-opening conversation he had with his 98-year-old great-grandmother.
The entertainer says, “My great-grandmother, 98-years-old, told me she was disappointed in me and a lot of the content I had created.”
“The choice of words a lot of times…she highlighted the fact that I have a six-year-old daughter and don’t always want to have to change the station or turn down the radio when my songs come on. So I needed a happy balance.”
Nick goes on to mention some of the “amazing women” he admires, including Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu — whom he thinks doesn’t get “enough credit” — and Mary J. Blige.
“I had the amazing opportunity in my younger years of working with Mary J. Blige. That was probably a dream come true,” the Wild ‘n Out host adds.
He even praises ex-wife Mariah Carey, explaining, “I’ve always been a fanboy of hers since I was about 11, 12 years old.”
Nick continues, “I learn so much from her, even to this day, just about being an artist, being a parent and really just one of the greatest people I’ve ever had the opportunity to meet in my life.”
