Ruven Afanador for BillboardAs Solange records the follow-up to her number one album A Seat at the Table album, she’s anxious to hear more music from the hottest breakout artist of the past year, Cardi B.
“I can’t wait to hear what her album sounds like,” she says in the new Billboard cover story.
The Grammy Award-winner is also looking forward to several more hip-hop releases.
“Azealia Banks is putting out new music,” Solange says. I think she’s phenomenal.”
Solange is also very excited about Busta Rhymes new “Get it” song featuring Missy Elliott and Kelly Rowland. Elliott is not only one of her favorite artists, but, Solange notes, she’s also her mentor.
“Missy is… well, she’s my mom,” she says.
Solange will receive the Harvard Foundation Artist of the Year award on March 3, and she’s especially proud of the recognition.
“It feels like such a colossal honor that I’m still working through feeling deserving of it,” she explains. “I didn’t come from a line of college-educated women. I feel so humbled and appreciative, [having been] an 18-year-old teenage mother who didn’t go to college, who always had to explore academia on her own.”
Regarding the recent controversy surrounding the lack of women and minorities recognized at award shows, Solange says she’s dedicating her music company Saint Heron to making a difference.
“I would like to see more diversity in all institutions, and I don’t just mean in music and art and fashion. I would like to see more people who look like me making decisions,” she comments. “Through Saint Heron we hope to uplift and empower and tell our story and celebrate each other every day.”
