Image Group LA/ABCAfter Charlie Puth seemed to admit a “short-lived” and “very impactful” fling with Selena Gomez in his new Billboard cover story, a source tells People the two “never dated.”
In 2016, Charlie and Selena released the hit duet “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” leading to rumors they were involved romantically. And the way the Billboard story was written did make it sound as though they’d had a relationship.
“I don’t kiss and tell, but the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes,” Charlie told Billboard about the song.
He added, “And that’s what was happening [with Gomez]. Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up.”
Charlie went on to claim he knew he wasn’t the only person on Selena’s mind at the time, but ultimately he’s happy with how the song turned out.
“You gather up a bunch of emotion with the life shovel, throw it in the life bucket, mix it up. And she evoked such good emotion on that song, it was a pleasure working with her,” he said. “That’s why I’m always happy to sing it, even though it came from a dark point in my life.”
