ABC/Randy HolmesJAY-Z said in an interview that aired on Saturday on The Van Jones Show on CNN that President Donald Trump‘s description of African countries as “s***hole countries” was “hurtful” and “disappointing.”
President Trump responded to Jay’s criticism on Twitter on Sunday morning writing, “Somebody please inform Jay-Z that because of my policies, Black Unemployment has just been reported to be at the LOWEST RATE EVER RECORDED!”
In the interview, JAY-Z said of President Trump’s remarks, “It is disappointing and it’s hurtful. It really is hurtful, more than so … everyone feels anger but after the anger, it’s real hurtful. Because it’s looking down at a whole population of people and it’s so misinformed because these places have beautiful people and beautiful everything.”
JAY-Z was referring to comments Trump made earlier this month at a White House meeting with lawmakers about immigration. Trump denied using that phrase, but admitted to using tough language during the discussion.
Jay explained, “This is the leader of the free world speaking like this … somewhere along his lineage something happened to him. Something happened to him and he is expressing it in this sort of way.”
During the interview, Jay also discussed his marriage to Beyoncé and the #MeToo movement, among other things.
As for his marriage, Jay said, “…We were never a ‘celebrity couple,’ we were a couple that happened to be celebrities. We are real people.”
The Brooklyn-born rapper also talked about the #MeToo movement. He said, “It’s almost like we normalized it.” He added, “…In order to survive you have to normalize it. So, this has been going on… So for it to get uncovered and the world to correct itself. This is what has to happen.”
