Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA RecordsSZA‘s debut album Ctrl has scored her five Grammy nominations, including one for Best New Artist and another for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
But the “Love Galore” artist tells the New York Times that due to her anxiety, she was convinced that the album “sucked.”
She adds that when she went on Twitter and threatened to quit music while recording the album, she “just wanted to hurry up and fail.”
Thankfully, her label intervened and scheduled the album’s release date.
Even now, with her Grammy nods, SZA still holds a bit of self-doubt, which she describes as “dysmorphia,” and says that if she does win a Grammy award, “the dysmorphia would really be hitting a peak.”
Generally, “dysmorphia” is described as the obsessive idea that some aspect of one’s own self is severely flawed.
But interestingly, SZA is confident about one thing: being “loud.”
“A lot of black women get that rap, ‘You’re loud, and unsavory, or crass or abrasive,'” she notes. “But I feel like that [bleep] is beautiful as hell.”
Fans will be able to see if SZA wins big at this year’s Grammys when the awards show airs live from New York’s Madison Square Garden on January 28 at 7:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
She’ll also be performing at the star-studded music event.
