BIZARRE HIGHWAY SHOOTING
State police from Troop E responded to a report of a victim who sustained a non life threatening gun shot wound resulting from a disturbance. It happened just before 5:30 Sunday afternoon while the victim was traveling on I-95 northbound near exit 76, the interchange with I-395. That section of highway was closed for about an hour for responding medical staff. The unidentified victim was transported to the hospital for treatment and assessment. Police were seen talking to a few men wearing motorcycle clothing but it was unclear what relationship that may have had to the incident. Police say there was no threat to the public and the incident remains under investigation.
INFANT IN TOW, MOM AND BUD PASSES OUT
New London police responded to a report of two people passed out with an infant child on the front steps of a local Church just after 12:30 Saturday afternoon. An infant was found awake in a stroller next to the two women as officers revived them. Jennifer Jarvis and Ashley Papski of New London were both charged with possession of a hallucinogen after police seized K2 and drug paraphernalia. Papski, the mother of the child, was also charged with risk of injury to a minor. The Department of Children and Families was contacted and took custody of the infant.
BUDGET VOTE TOMORROW
The polls will be open in Stonington tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m for voters to vote on the proposed 2018-19 budget of $70.25 million. The budget is $2.3 million more than the current budget due to a $1.8 million hike in debt payments caused by the $67 million elementary school project. A town meeting will be held at 8:30 p.m. in the basement of Town Hall. to announce the results of the referendum vote.
ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED
New London Police have arrested a 29-year-old man after having him extradited on a warrant from the White Plains Correction Institution. The suspect, Christian Guzman-Juarado was arrested for an assault and robbery last summer, when he allegedly stole a pick up truck and assaulted a woman in a New London parking lot. The unidentified woman was transported to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for treatment and released. The truck later was found in New York. Guzman-Juarado is facing multiple charges including third-degree robbery, first-degree larceny and second-degree assault. A court date was not released.
TOP CHEFS LITTLE TO WORK WITH
New London will play host next month to ten world-class chefs, who will compete to raise money for the New London school district. The “$1.25 Throwdown,” competition will be held June 2nd at the Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School. Chefs will compete to make the best meal, working with the same $1.25 budget and nutritional standards required by public schools. Meals will be judged by both students and a panel of respected food writers.
