Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesAfter getting backlash, Killer Mike has issued a two-part video apology to clarify an interview he did with the National Rifle Association about gun ownership in America.
In his first apology video, via Twitter, the Run the Jewels rapper begins, “I took a move out of one of my hero’s book — Dr. Martin Luther King, the founder of Kingian Nonviolence — and I sat with people who I might not always agree with.”
“That interview was used a week later by NRATV to disparage a very noble campaign that I actually support.”
That campaign in question is March For Our Lives, the student-led movement dedicated to ending gun violence in the United States.
Saturday’s march, which drew thousands upon thousands of participants across the entire country, was organized by high school students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a gunman killed 17 people on Valentine’s Day.
NRATV ran its interview with Killer Mike on the same day the protests took place.
Killer Mike continues, “I, being a former youth organizer, currently an activist and organizer, respect [the students’] leadership.”
“So, I wanna say, first, I’m sorry guys. I’m sorry that an interview I did about a minority, black people in this country, and gun rights, was used as a weapon against you guys.”
In his second video, Mike adds, “My interview with said organization who we all don’t agree with was supposed to be something that continued a conversation, or that helped a conversation happen that I felt needed to happen.”
“And that conversation is about African-American gun ownership.”
