ABC/Tim OgierCanada’s 2018 Juno Awards will take place this Sunday, March 25 in Vancouver, and Nickelback is once again on the list of nominees. Since winning Best New Group in 2001, the band has been nominated for their home country’s equivalent of the Grammys nearly 40 times; this time around, their album Feed the Machine is up for Rock Album of the Year.
“It’s really, really great to be recognized by your country for what you’re doing,” bassist Mike Kroeger tells ABC Radio. “Getting that approval is really, really important.”
Koreger also enjoys the personal nature of the Junos, given that Canada’s music industry is “very much a small group.”
“Whenever we would go to the Juno Awards or anything Juno-related, it’s kinda like a family reunion,” Kroeger says. “Everybody knows each other, all the bands know each other. The new bands get recognized and welcomed into the group.”
Other Juno nominees this year include Death from Above, Theory, Arcade Fire and the late Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie. Arcade Fire will perform at the ceremony, and Rush‘s Geddy Lee will be on hand to induct Barenaked Ladies into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
You can watch the Junos Sunday starting at 8 p.m. ET via CBCMusic.ca/Junos.
