Third Man/ColumbiaThe new Jack White era has officially begun. The ex-White Stripes frontman’s third solo album, Boarding House Reach, is out today.
Leading up to the announcement of the album, White teased that it would be “a bizarre one” and that it sounded like “good gardening music or roofing music or…back-alley stabbing music.” That description didn’t seem like much of an exaggeration when, a month later, he released “Servings and Portions from my Boarding House Reach,” a four-minute sound collage featuring snippets from the upcoming album.
In January, White officially announced the details of Boarding House Reach. Along with the news, he released two new songs: lead single “Connected By Love” and the frenetic track “Respect Commander.”
White followed those songs up with “Corporation,” “Over and Over and Over” and “Ice Station Zebra.” “Over and Over and Over” was originally written 13 years ago, while “Ice Station Zebra” dates back to White’s scrapped collaboration with rapper JAY-Z.
Each of the songs released managed to live up to White’s early “bizarre” characterization, combining elements of rock, hip-hop, jazz and funk into a sound he described as “incredibly modern.”
“I wanted to take punk, hip-hop and rock & roll, and funnel it all into a 2018 time capsule,” he said.
White will take Boarding House Reach on the road this spring and summer on a North American headlining tour, starting April 19 with a hometown show in Detroit. If you plan to catch any of the dates, you may want to leave your phone at home, since the shows will be a “phone-free, 100% human experience.”
Prior to the tour, White will play an album release day concert tonight in Brooklyn, New York. The show will stream live online via Twitter starting at 10 p.m. ET.
