Robby Krieger & John Densmore on The Big Interview (News & Guts Media/ AXS TV)A new film documenting a star-studded 2016 tribute concert to late Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek will premiere on April 28 at the New Jersey’s Asbury Park Music & Film Festival.
The screening of the movie, Break On Thru: A Celebration of Ray Manzarek and The Doors, takes place at noon ET at House of Independents in Asbury Park and will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Doors drummer John Densmore and director Justin Kreutzmann.
Densmore tells ABC Radio that he “can’t wait till [the film] comes out.”
The concert the film documents took place on February 12, 2016 — which would’ve been Manzarek’s 76th birthday — at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. John reunited with Doors guitarist Robby Krieger at the show, and they were joined by various members of Stone Temple Pilots, Jane’s Addiction, Foo Fighters and X.
“It was really cool,” Densmore says of the concert. Manzarek died of bile duct cancer in May 2013. He was 74.
In other news, Densmore and Krieger will be featured in the latest episode of the AXS TV series The Big Interview, hosted by veteran newsman Dan Rather. It premieres tonight at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. The Doors members were interviewed at the L.A.-area venue The Whisky a Go Go, where they served as the house band early in their career.
As Densmore explains, in the interview with Rather, he and Krieger shared memories about the nightclub while also chatting about politics and other topics.
In a preview clip from the show, John discusses late Doors frontman Jim Morrison’s self-destructive tendencies.
“Self-destruction and creativity don’t always come in the same package,” Densmore notes. “Picasso lived to 90. But with Jim, they came together.”
