“I’m going on these Brian Wilson-esque journeys for two-and-a-half years at a time and figuring out the right amount of three minutes and 30 seconds,” frontman Chase Lawrence tells ABC Radio. “And the right little times to put little noises in and stuff.”
“I think that’s where a lot of the experimentation comes from, the little new sounds, it’s just me being in my room for hours alone,” he laughs.
On the lyrical side, “Growing Pains” explores being on the road away from family and loved ones and how “unappealing” that can be — and the song doesn’t actually include the phrase “growing pains.”
“I’m just trying to figure out what I wanna be, what we all wanna be, whether we wanna settle down, or quit doing this,” Lawrence explains. “I figured out that sentiment is…much more than just me being unappealing to my girlfriend and my job being unappealing, this is just part of growing up, and I realized how universal that was. And that’s where the title came from.”
You also won’t find any mention of the ’80s sitcom Growing Pains, which starred Alan Thicke and Kirk Cameron, in the song. However, Lawrence has previously dropped references to another TV show in his music.
“I love Saved by the Bell still to this day,” he says. “I’ve seen every episode.”
COIN is currently working on a new album, the follow-up to 2017’s How Will You Know If You Never Try.
