Diwang ValdezThe Voice season eight finalist Koryn Hawthorne has come a long way, from being coached by Pharrell Williams on the popular singing competition series to now having her own hit single, “Won’t He Do It.”
The 20-year-old gospel singer tells ABC Radio about the first time she met the N.E.R.D.frontman, who she remembers was enthusiastic to work with her.
“The first time I met him he was like, ‘We have to do gospel!’, she recalls.”
“So it was crazy that he was just on the same wave and it just taught me to be myself and not change for nobody. Whether that’s fame or just to be on a show or any of that. ‘Cause they accepted it [my inclination towards gospel music] so much.”
As for the “Happy” artist’s personality, Koryn assures that he’s “one of the most down-to-earth people you’ll ever meet.” “I think anybody that meets him says the same thing.”
“Being around him I learned a lot about how I wanna be as a person in the industry and being an inspiration to everybody. Everybody on set loved him.”
Now with the inspirational influence of tracks such as “Warriors” and “Won’t He Do It,” Koryn advises other aspiring singers who’d want to follow in her footsteps to not look at auditioning for a show like The Voice as “your lifeline or your ticket.”
“I didn’t go in it [The Voice] to win…take every single moment as a learning experience. Every no too!”
