Sony Music EntertainmentJourney fans continue to embrace the band’s 1988 Greatest Hits album with open arms, and the compilation’s enduring popularity has helped it achieve a very rare chart milestone. The record has become just the third album ever in the 61-year history of the Billboard 200 to spend at least 500 weeks on the tally.
The only other albums that have notched more weeks on the chart are Bob Marley and The Wailers‘ 1984 retrospective Legend with 510 and the all-time leader, Pink Floyd‘s 1973 classic The Dark Side of the Moon, with a whopping 937.
Journey’s Greatest Hits debuted on the Billboard 200 in December 1988 and peaked at #10 in February of 1989. The album exited the chart in October 1990, but returned in December 2009. That coincided with a change in the tally’s rules, which from May 1991 to November 2009 had barred catalog albums — releases more than 18 months old that dropped below #100 — from appearing on the Billboard 200.
Greatest Hits, which currently sits at #101 on the chart, has sold more than 15 million copies in the U.S. alone. It features such enduring Journey tunes as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Wheel in the Sky,” “Faithfully,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Who’s Crying Now?,” “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” “Lights” and “Open Arms.
