Credit: Dana TynanJoan Baez has joined the ranks of veteran artists like Paul Simon and Elton John who have announced farewell tours. The legendary folksinger, who says 2018 will be her last year of “formal touring,” has lined up a fall North American leg running from a September 11 concert in Ithaca, New York, through a November 17 show in Oakland, California.
The trek will visit a variety of major cities, and will include two-night stands in Boston and New York, as well as a performance at Nashville’s famous Ryman Auditorium.
Baez’s tour will be in support of her brand-new studio album, Whistle Down the Wind, which will be released this Friday, March 2. Tickets for Joan’s upcoming gigs will go on sale to the general public that same day. Fans who buy tickets will receive a free CD or digital copy of the record.
“I’m looking forward to being on the road with a beautiful new album of which I am truly proud,” says the 77-year-old singer. “I welcome the opportunity to share this new music as well as longtime favorites with my audiences around the world.”
Baez recorded Whistle Down the Wind in Los Angeles over the course of 10 days with Grammy-winning producer Joe Henry. The 10-track collection includes songs penned by Tom Waits, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Henry.
On her collaboration with Henry, Baez notes, “We both work fast and were musically on the same wavelength. I work best with musicians who are as willing as I am to wing it and he assembled a group of players who did just that.”
Prior to the North American trek, Joan will mount a lengthy European leg, beginning with a show this Friday in Stockholm, Sweden.
