Capitol/UMeA limited-edition colored-vinyl version of The Beach Boys‘ 1966 pop masterpiece Pet Sounds will be released this week exclusively via The Sound of Vinyl website.
The LP will feature a stereo mix of the acclaimed album pressed on 130-gram vinyl with the disc colored half yellow and half green.
The special edition of Pet Sounds will go on sale at TheSoundofVinyl.us this Friday, February 9, while fans who register for the website’s text-message service will have the chance to purchase the LP a day earlier.
Released in May 1966, Pet Sounds was The Beach Boys’ 12th studio album and the first album that the band made after Brian Wilson decided to retire from touring to concentrate on composing and recording new music for the group.
To make the album, Wilson enlisted a variety of session musicians to create the basic tracks, which showcased orchestration, sound effects and unusual instruments accompanying the band’s multilayered vocal harmonies.
Pet Sounds peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200 chart, and features the hits “Sloop John B,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “God Only Knows.” It has gone on to sell more than 1 million copies in the U.S., and landed at #2 on Rolling Stone‘s 2012 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Wilson will continue his long-running solo tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds this year with a series of shows currently scheduled from an April 18 concert in Colorado Springs, Colorado, through a May 20 performance in Pompano Beach, Florida.
