ABC/Image Group LAHow do you follow up a mega-hit like “Feel It Still”? If you’re Portugal. the Man, you make the song “Live in the Moment” your next single. That’s looking like a pretty good move, as the track has zipped to the top five on Billboard‘s Alternative Songs chart.
While “Live in the Moment” is following in the successful footsteps of its predecessor, the two songs came together in very different ways.
“Unlike ‘Feel It Still’ — which took roughly an hour for some reason, it’s the fastest song we ever done — ‘Live in the Moment’ was one of those things where we were, like, banging our head against the wall,” bassist Zach Carothers told reporters backstage at Sunday’s Grammys. “I think there’s like 23 different version of ‘Live in the Moment,’ we walked all over the place.”
Despite those struggles, Carothers said recording “Live in the Moment” was “really fun,” especially when the band got to use a computer to sing the track’s outro.
“I liked that, typing in words and having a computer sing the song to us, it was pretty fun,” Carothers said.
While “Live in the Moment” has a ways to go to match the massive success of “Feel It Still” — which won them the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance — both tracks came from the same humble beginnings.
“We knew we had a good song [with ‘Feel It Still’], we’re no dummies,” Carothers laughs. “We knew it was gonna do alright, but far surpassed anything that we thought it would do. I mean, this stuff is just crazy.”
Both “Feel It Still” and “Live in the Moment” appear on Portugal. the Man’s latest album, Woodstock.
