Plain Spoken: From the Chicago Theatre features footage from the show, as well as narration by Mellencamp, who reflects on growing up in the Midwest, his successful music career, his views on life and more.
The concert, which took place on October 25, 2016, featured Mellencamp and his band performing plenty of his classic hits, along with several selections from his then-latest album, Plain Spoken, and a couple tunes from his 2017 follow-up, Sad Clowns & Hillbillies. Carlene Carter, the late Johnny Cash‘s stepdaughter, was Mellencamp’s special guest at the show. Carter went on to collaborate with John on Sad Clowns & Hillbillies.
Among the well-known tunes Mellencamp played at the Chicago Theatre concert were “Small Town,” “Check It Out,” “Jack & Diane,” “Paper in Fire” “Crumblin’ Down,” “Authority Song,” “Pink Houses” and “Cherry Bomb.”
