Derek Blanks/DB PhotographyTina Campbell is up for a Grammy award for Best Gospel Performance and the Mary Mary singer-turned-solo gospel artist tells ABC Radio that she simply had “no expectation whatsoever” to receive a Grammy nod for her hit single, “Too Hard Not To.”
“When I got the call from my team telling me that I was nominated, I was utterly blown away. Because I wasn’t expecting to be,” she says.
“I know that a lot of time campaigning and politics and all that. And when you have really great presence and I was, like, I don’t think I did all of the stuff to kinda get in that space. And so I had no expectations… I’m completely grateful for this platform, for this opportunity, for the nomination, for the attention because I do believe that this is a really incredible song.”
Tina adds that her Grammy-nominated song was created when her “life was falling apart,” which makes her even more grateful.
She explains, “I had the most, seemingly, unforgivable situation that I had to deal with, which was infidelity in my marriage. And I went through it all publicly and it was the hardest thing I ever did. My daddy died in the middle of that. And I couldn’t even grieve.”
“A song that came out of that horrific infidelity and all of that kind of stuff, now five years later, has been nominated for a Grammy.”
Should Campbell win, she says, “I’ma be blown all the way away.”
But don’t expect her to have a winner’s speech prepared. “I don’t like to be calculated,” she explains. “I like to flow from the head and with passion.”
The 60th Grammy Awards air tonight on CBS starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.
