Mike Coppola/Getty ImagesPearl Jam will be rocking out and giving back to their community in one move with a just-announced pair of massive summer concerts in Seattle, dubbed “The Home Shows.”
The two gigs, set for August 8 and 10 at Seattle’s Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners, will put the spotlight on the area’s homelessness issue. Pearl Jam themselves are pledging $1 million to help the cause, and the band is challenging their fans to join the effort, with a goal of raising $10 million.
“Seattle is our hometown,” says Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard. “When there are challenges here, we want to be part of the solution. It’s heartening so many organizations and individuals coming together to do the same. It’s going to take all of us.”
Seattle Mariners chair and managing partner John Stanton adds, “The Mariners are proud to join with Pearl Jam and partners across King County to help find creative solutions to this region-wide crisis.”
As part of the announcement, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready raised the band’s flag at Seattle’s Space Needle Monday morning.
“This is where I grew up, and it’s very important to me to play music here in Seattle,” said McCready, according to KOMONews.com. “This is where I learned how to play music, this is my life and my family is growing up here. I love this city will all my heart and it’s been very good to us and we want to give back, too.”
