STANDOFF ENDS PEACEFULLY
Police say a four-hour standoff that started in the early morning hours when a man barricaded himself inside his Connecticut home and threatened to harm himself has ended without injuries. Police in Stratford say the standoff began at about 2 a.m. Monday and ended about four hours later when the man was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Officers responded to the home to check on the 37-year-old man after receiving a report that he was suicidal.
TUITION PROPOSAL
Connecticut State Colleges and Universities president Mark Ojakian is proposing a tuition break for students from Puerto Rici and the U.S. Virgin Islands who were displacd by Hurricane Maria. Ojakian says students would be able to access other services, such as counseling, at the state’s four regional universities and 12 community colleges. The idea must be approved by the Board of Regents.
NL BUDGET IN LIMBO
It looks like jobs are on the chopping block in New London as the city council looks for ways to trim its budget. The city council repealed its 90-million dollar budget last month, prompting Mayor Mike Passero to propose a more than $4 million dollar cut from the city’s spending plan. Councilor Martha Marx says her colleagues plan on approving a new spending plan by the end of October, regardless of whether a state budget is in place.
COLUMBUS STATUE VANDALIZED
A statue of Christopher Columbus in Rhode Island has been found vandalized on the day marking his arrival in the Americas. The statue of Columbus is located in Columbus Square in Providence. It was found doused in red and black paint on Monday. The vandalism included graffiti of an expletive followed by Columbus’ name. A spokesperson for Mayor Jorge Elorza says the paint will be cleaned up. Police are investigating.
