TRIPLE-A SPOKESPERSON AMY PARMENTER SAYS PRICES SHOULD START TO DROP BY MID-SEPTEMBER. AT LEAST TWO MAJOR PIPELINES THAT MOVE GASOLINE HAVE BEEN SLOWED OR STOPPED BY THE STORM.
LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE ELSE TOSSED THE GUN
A Ledyard man has been charged with tossing a loaded gun out of the window of a speeding car on Shewville Road. Police say 23-year old Frank Kelly was a passenger in the vehicle being driven by 21-year old Jordan Lacey back on May 25th. Authorities say Lacey was speeding near Coachmen Pike, when he ignored officer’s requests to stop. Police say Lacey hit two cars at the Route 214 intersection, before colliding with two cruisers. Lacey initially admitted to tossing the gun, but police, based on a DNA sample, say it was Kelly who did it. Police say the gun was stolen from a Norwich home in December 2015. Both suspects face court appearances.
EDGERTON PLANS SUBMITTED
Plans for a 72-unit housing complex on the former Edgerton school property in New London have been submitted, one day after a judge’s ruling cleared the way for the submittal. The project, which originally called for 124 units, had been stalled due to neighborhood opposition, and rejection of a proposed zoning change by city officials. A stipulated judgement from the New London Planning and Zoning Commission was approved Thursday by Judge Timothy Bates. The plans are scheduled to be reviewed by the P and Z commission later this month.
STONINGTON SCHOOLS OPEN AMID CONSTRUCTION
Stonington students go back to school Tuesday, with two schools in the midst of a major renovation and expansion. Education officials, though, say proper safety precautions are in place at the West Vine and Deans Mill schools. Students will be attending classes in the existing part of the building, while work centers on the additions. Chain link fences and locked gates surround the construction areas, and all gym classes will be held indoors. Recess will take place outdoors on fenced-in and paved areas. Air testing shows no evidence of asbestos or PCB’s. The school project is targeted for a January 2019 completion.
SWIMMING OKAY
All local state park swimming areas are okay to use this Labor Day weekend. State environmental officials say the only places that are closed are Wadsworth Falls State Park in Middlefield due to high bacteria, and two swimming areas in Shelton and Southbury due to blue green algae.
STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS
WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) – Questions are still swirling after a mysterious object was removed from the waters off a Rhode Island beach. The circular metal object was taken out of the waters off East Beach in Westerly by an excavator Thursday, and it’s much bigger than originally thought. Peter Brockmann, president of the East Beach Association, hopes someone who sees a media report about the object knows what it is. Before it was removed, the best guess was it is what is called an acoustic Doppler profiler to monitor currents. That device is about 4.5 feet long. But the object removed Thursday is about twice that size. The object was discovered last month at the beach near singer Taylor Swift’s oceanfront mansion.
