SUB PRODUCTION MAY INCREASE
It is possible that the U.S. Navy could build up to 13 Virginia-Class attack submarines between 2019 and 2023. That would mean an increase to a three-subs-a-year build rate and more work for Electric Boat. A House Armed Services Subcommittee, of which Rep. Joe Courtney sits as the top Democrat, would like to authorize the Navy to make this aggressive change. The panel would like to see the advanced production as a part of the defense spending deliberations for the 2018 fiscal year.
YORK GLITCH
Computer files at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic, with information about current and former employees, temporarily became accessible to staff members earlier this week. According to a Corrections Department spokesperson the exposure, which was caused by an electronic file merge, was quickly identified and corrected. In a statement, it was noted that the sensitive information was not accessed by inmates or the general public. The agency’s management information systems unit is taking steps to prevent an incident of this type from happening again.
COL. LEDYARD MAY GET UPGRADE
Ledyard town officials received approval last night from the Finance Committee to apply for a grant that could add sidewalks and bike lanes to a section of Colonel Ledyard Highway. If the application is approved, the project would be funded by a state transit development grant. The approximately one mile stretch of road being considered, between the high school and Ledyard Center,is currently not pedestrian or cyclist-friendly.
BUDGETS REJECTED
Thompson voters have rejected a second attempt to pass town and education budgets. Together the budgets would have meant a 1.9% mill tax increase, something voters could not get on board with. More than half the increase was due to proposed state cuts. The Board of Finance has decided to wait until the state makes their budget decisions before sending taxpayers another budget. The Thompson Board of Selectman will meet today to determine what to do about tax bills.
